MedAccess: Working to Achieve Health Equity

MedAccess is an organization based in the United Kingdom that strives to enforce change by collaborating with several stakeholders to achieve equitable access to medication across more than 90 countries. Established in 2017, this organization believes that raising awareness of the current state of medical inequity is just as critical as influencing the decisions made. MedAccess works to advocate for those living in low- and middle-income countries by initiating research projects and improving access to new medicines and technology. These aims are coupled with the desire to allow patients to play a more active role in their care, which becomes possible when cost-effectiveness and timely access to medications are prioritized. As a result, infection and death rates from illnesses can be reduced through an increase in diagnostic tools, vaccines, and medicines in overlooked communities. This organization takes pride in being mission-driven, humble, relentless, transparent, and focused on the well-being of people worldwide.

Once new medicines are approved, they are primarily distributed to developed countries, leaving underserved communities waiting years to have this same access. Moreover, even when these products reach low- and middle-income countries, they are often unaffordable, leading to many otherwise preventable deaths. Through innovative finance efforts, improved health outcomes can be achieved by promoting efficient markets that are affordable and offer safe medicines.

Thus far, MedAccess has profoundly impacted millions of lives worldwide, driving the change necessary to improve access to innovative products. This organization has ensured that their work is significant by establishing seven guarantees. As a result, viral load testing for HIV and hepatitis has increased, with 12 countries having more than two suppliers of these diagnostic tools. In addition, MedAccess reports that 8.6 million malaria have been averted due to the availability of mosquito nets in 10 different countries. Throughout the pandemic, more than 75 million COVID-19 vaccines for children through the COVAX Facility, as well as 3.7 million tests, have been supplied to several communities. This organization has also contributed to avoiding over 50,000 stillbirths and miscarriages associated with syphilis and HIV. MedAccess is a trailblazer organization committed to its mission, working diligently to meet the goals established since its founding. Their notable accomplishments highlight their success and provide insight into the exciting future ahead.
